Climb Africa's Highest Mountain via the Famous Marangu Route

Take on the adventure of a lifetime with this 5-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb, one of the most popular ways to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the Marangu Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that offers overnight accommodation in mountain huts, making it an excellent choice for climbers looking for added comfort during their trek.

Starting from Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, this route takes you through changing landscapes, from lush rainforest and alpine meadows to the dramatic lunar landscape near the summit. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak, Kibo, and the surrounding plains stretching into Kenya.

Although Marangu is considered one of the more accessible routes on Kilimanjaro, reaching the summit still requires determination, good fitness, and proper preparation. With the support of experienced mountain guides, porters, and a dedicated cook, you’ll be well looked after throughout your climb.

Standing on Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres) is a truly unforgettable achievement and one that few experiences can match.

The Marangu Route remains one of the most popular Kilimanjaro climbing routes for good reason. It is the only route with permanent mountain huts, offering more comfort than camping routes. The trail is well established, making it suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers who are physically fit and looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience.

From dense rainforest and open moorland to alpine desert and snow-covered peaks, every day offers a completely different landscape. Reaching Uhuru Peak is not just about standing on Africa’s highest point—it’s about pushing your limits, enjoying breathtaking scenery, and creating memories that will stay with you forever

After approximately four hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Mandara Hut, where you'll have time to relax before taking a short walk to the nearby Maundi Crater. On a clear day, you'll enjoy beautiful views towards Kenya and the surrounding countryside.

Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m

Walking Time: 3–4 Hours

After breakfast, continue your ascent as the rainforest gradually gives way to open moorland covered with giant heathers and alpine vegetation.

As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with excellent views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, Kilimanjaro's highest volcanic cone.

After five to six hours of hiking, you'll reach Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the night while enjoying spectacular views across the mountain.

The trail crosses the wide saddle that separates Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Vegetation becomes scarce as you continue towards Kibo Hut, your final stop before the summit attempt.

After arriving at the hut, enjoy an early dinner and get some rest. You'll wake shortly before midnight to begin your climb to Uhuru Peak.

As dawn approaches, you'll reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres), the highest point in Africa.

Standing at the summit is an unforgettable moment and the reward for all your determination and effort.

After celebrating, taking photos, and enjoying the breathtaking views, begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.
